The World of Vinyl - Expressions, Flowers, Pictures and Even Wallpaper !

Great product on the market - vinyl expressions and pictures! Put up and take down with out damaging walls! There are a few companies that offer such a great product - Customized Walls ( which offers removable wallpaper), Wall Pops and my favorite Uppercase Living (for the smaller projects).

Vinyl is a great way to be able to express yourself and create a one of a kind designed home.

Unique designs

I love a great headboard, but sometimes its just not in the budget to purchase a headboard - so using a product like this and applying right to the wall gives you the appearance of a headboard and grounds your bed. I have mentioned it before that your bed is probably the largest piece of furniture in your bedroom, use it as the focal point.

Headboard Idea from Uppercase Living

There are many possibilities with the vinyl expressions. In a past blog, I had mentioned wall papering the back of bookshelves to create a great simple visual interest in a room as well as some pops of color -

With Customized Walls you can custom order pattern and size to fit perfectly into each opening. Uppercase Living has certain sizes to choose from for expressions and most of the pictures. They do have a custom section as well.

Vinyl expressions are perfect for your home or office, rental or not - Inspirational quotes above your desk at work is a great motivator and adds design to the wall. In many of our homes we have the awkward space that we are not sure what to do. Vinyl letters flow with the wall, so rounded corners, small nooks, and soffits get a face lift.

In many home family pictures are displayed, how about adding some expressions to the mix and making the wall speak for itself -

Uppercase Living

Choose words the represent your family, words that you want your children to live by, or even the names of each member of the family.

On to the removable wallpaper! YES removable! it is easy to hang and easy to remove - the options are endless. With Customized Walls you can use one of the designs they have in their database or you can customize your own photo! Say a honeymoon picture of Fiji! Or the Mountain tops out west. You can do anything.  The best part is there is no wallpaper paste, no mess and it is all about you!

Want to make a statement
Other options that you have with vinyl is small decorative items, looking for the perfect wood sign to hang in your kitchen? Uppercase living has options and if they do not have the saying you want; you can create it yourself using the individual letters.

Apartment Living Can be a Challange : Here Are Some Tips and Tricks to Help Maximize Your Space

I have lived in a multitude of apartments, it is a joke with close friends that I move too much - maybe it is the challenge to test my skills and designing a new space every year, the fact is that they seem to be getting smaller and smaller. Over the years I have learned a few great tricks to maximize my space.
Here are 10 tips to help you create a space that is functional for you and maximizes your small apartment home.

Tip#1: The first thing that is key is to keep your furniture to scale with the room. If you have big bulky furniture, the furniture will take over the space and will create a small closed in feeling. When shopping for a sofa keep the lines clean and simple. There are a number of retailers that specialize in "apartment" size furnishings.

This example is a great comfortable sofa from Crate and Barrel
Tip #2: Buy yourself a little extra visual room, make a lower ceiling look higher by mounting window treatments closer to the ceiling. The vertical lift will bring your eye up. When possible paint your ceiling as well. This also helps to create height.

Notice how your eye is carried up with the yellow window treatment.

Tip #3: Double duty furniture! This one is very important, to reduce clutter and save space. Form follows function as they say in the design world. Well one of the most functional pieces of furniture in my mind is the storage ottoman! A simple storage ottoman can give you 3 different functions - storage, table and extra seating when needed. The cost of the ottomans range depending on where you purchase. For as little as $20 you start creating a streamlined look from Target. Crate and Barrel as a storage ottoman that double as a wine bar!
Open the ottoman and you have a great space for storing wine

Close the ottoman and you have extra seating or a coffee table

Tip #4:  Supply storage yourself. Many apartment just do not the right amount of storage space for us. Knowing how to utilize the space you have can be tricky. At your local hardware stores you can purchase closet organize systems to help maximize the space, but also remember the storage opportunities you have under your bed and above cabinets in the kitchen. Buying totes that are made for under the bed is a great way to store out of season clothing and bed linens. Above the cabinets is a great spot to store items that you do not use that often in the kitchen. Decorative baskets or boxes helps to hide the clutter but also adds an element of color, texture and functionality for sometimes a wasted space.

Tip #5: Know what you need for space. Just because your apartment home comes with a dining nook does not mean that you need to use it for that. A nook can be a great place to add a home office, or an exercise area. Have a 2 bedroom? but really only have guests over 2 or 3 times a year. Invest in an air mattress and make that second bedroom what you want it to be, love to have dinner parties but your eat-in kitchen just is not big enough for a full dining table? Then use the second bedroom as your dining room. That frees up your eat-in kitchen for a home office space.

Tip#6: A secret design trick is to use lots of mirrors to make spaces look bigger. Mirrors trick the eye by reflecting light, and adding depth to a room. When possible put mirrors across from a window and it will give the illusion that the room keeps going. Be creative with mirrors, cluster them, tie them up with pretty ribbon and an easy update to an old mirror - paint the frame or embellish it.

Tip #7: Lucite furniture is a hot trend right now - mixing the Lucite with solid pieces is a great transitional look.
Take notice of the chair at the desk!

coffee table that adds no visual weight to the room, at a quick glance you would think the books were floating.
Tip #8: Using area rugs to define your individual spaces. Smaller apartment homes require some creative floor plans and some areas need to house different functions. Say your living area in a one bedroom needs to be living room and dining room. To separate those spaces visually with out adding walls or bulk - use a small area rug, Visually you are breaking up the space and grounding each room. It is okay to layer area rugs on wall to wall carpeting. ( just be sure to have a grip pad under to stop it from bulking up) Best part about smaller area rugs is the smaller price tag! Check out your local Home Goods, Lowes and Home Depots they have good rugs for great prices. If you have a Building 19 in your area, they too have some area rugs that are not too expensive and will last you a couple years.

Tip # 9: Floating shelves is an easy way to add storage with out taking up floor space. Not having the brackets under the shelf keeps the look clean and visually doesn't distract the eye.

Tip #10: Go right into your bedroom and make your bed the focal point. Layer on layers of pillows, throws and blankets. Make your bed look like it belongs in a 5 star hotel (after all your home is 5 star)
The bed is probably your biggest piece of furniture in your bedroom, by making that the focal point they eye is drawn away from the walls again visually making the room not feel so small.

Hope these tips have helped you see that you can have a great design even in a small space! Key things to remember :     Get rid of clutter!  Keep your scale in check! and Design for your needs!

Food as Inspiration!

Sitting at the laundry mat wondering what I should write about in my Blog today it dawned on me how hungry I was. I started searching through pictures that I have from a great Chef out in California. Chef Christopher George does not only create delish dishes for your taste buds but also the plates are aestically pleasing as well.
Here are a couple pics to get your mouth watering and your design ideas flowing!

Deep rich brown paired with brilliant reds and complimented by golden yellows and oranges!
Eye catching lime green and zesty orange are toned down with the lighter shades of brown and creamy whites!

Can you imagine framing these photos and displaying them in your kitchen, or restaurant. The colors a out of this world. I always say that inspiration can come from anywhere including photos of food. Keeping the back ground neutral and adding table linens that draw out the colors that are given to you. The vibrant colors can be matched up with paint chips, the deep redish purple in the meat is nicely complimented by the dark brown on the edges. I would frame these in a black frame with a crisp white wide mat. Adding fabrics into the space using the colors to create a solid scheme. Including the orange tones from the carrot.  The other photo, brings in the spunky colors of lime green and orange paired with deep brown and gray in the portobello mushroom.

Deep purple is toned down with the crisp white and complimented nicely with bright green!

The contrast that is created with the colors in the food are one of a kind. Using this as a inspiration gives you a no fail color scheme. Think about the last time you made a garden salad for yourself and how pleasing it was to your eye, now take a few of the colors and put them on the walls, fabrics and in your accessories;  It is almost like Mother Nature created our food for design inspiration.

Simple things that you can do to change up your space - add a fresh bowl of fruit or veggies on your counter. It is an easy and fairly inexpensive decorating idea, as well as healthy for you. Check out cookbooks that you have around (specially ones you don't use) tear out pictures of food that you like and frame them. The cover of many cookbooks also have great inspirational ideas, display your books instead of hiding them behind a door.

Hope I have inspired you to take a look at food and use it as an inspiration but also as a decorating secret.
Happy Designing!

Thank Yoy Chef George for sharing your photos with me!

Artwork? Where to start? Where to find? and a big question, how to afford?

Yesterday I was at a local art gallery with a client and it dawned on me that most people do not know they can go to art galleries just to look!
In the city of Manchester, NH there is a number of great galleries, but what good are they if you do not know about them.
My reason for sharing this with you is two fold, you get to know about the galleries and you can purchase some great artwork for your home that is one of a kind.

Framers Market

Art 3 Gallery

Art plays such a key roll in a complete design. It can help to set the mood, create a conversation and express you. Yesterday while standing in East Colony, my clients says I love the colors in that painting but, I do not know how to decorate around it- I guess that is why she has hired me :)

I am always telling clients and my followers to have an inspiration and work off the inspiration, using artwork as an inspiration is a great way to build layers in your room. You can pull colors from the a painting, from a photograph, a fabric panel.

Accent colors for accessories will be fun with the deep red

Taking the black flowers and using that as a subtle accent (the pulls on the dresser)

This is a photograph by Eric Ouellette - the amber colors can be carried into glass shades,
fabrics and in metals used in the room

The painting in this photo from a Boston designer, is being recreated by local artists Diana Spaulding of Doodlin Di. She is taking the colors and concept but creating a custom piece for a client, at a reasonable price.
There is also a Manchester event that you can tour all the art galleries in one night, some that I have not included are on the tour as well .
The event is called Open Doors Trolly Tour, to get more info follow this link:
